Two Decades of Dedication: The Governors’ Camp Collection and MRCT Story
Our commitment to the local community began over two decades ago when Maasai parents, driven by a powerful desire for their children’s education, built a small school through their own efforts. Governors’ Camp Collection and the BBC’s Big Cat Diary team were proud to support this early vision.
This inspiring initiative gained further momentum in 2004 with a visit from Richard Long, a guest at Little Governors’ Camp. Witnessing the school’s urgent needs, he and his wife and friends founded The Mara Rianda Charitable Trust (MRCT). This marked the beginning of a strong and impactful partnership with Governors’ Camp Collection.
Together, Governors’ Camp Collection and MRCT have empowered over 5,000 children with access to quality education. Our joint efforts have resulted in significant improvements:
- Construction of vital educational and living facilities, including classrooms, dormitories, a library, teacher housing, a dining hall, and sanitation facilities.
- Establishment of sustainable resources through the installation of a borehole, water tanks, a solar pump, and water purification systems.
- Ongoing support for the backbone of the school: teachers’ salaries, student scholarships, and essential learning materials.
In our continued commitment to holistic development, 2024 saw the launch of the Children in the Wilderness Eco-Club programme at the school. Every two weeks, thirty young learners participate in engaging conservation education led by dedicated Eco-Mentors. Their enthusiasm culminated in an enriching four-day Eco-Camp at Governors’ Private Camp in November 2024 (Watch the video).
