What Is the Kenya eTA and Who Needs One?

On 1 January 2024, Kenya replaced its eVisa system with the Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), which is now the standard entry requirement for most visitors. Apart from holders of valid Kenya passports, Kenya Permanent Residence, valid Work Permits and Passes, and citizens of the East African Partner States, all visitors, including infants and children, who intend to travel to the Republic of Kenya must have an approved Kenya eTA before the start of their journey.

How to Apply for Your Kenya eTA

Visitors must apply for a Kenya eTA via www.etakenya.go.ke and pay a processing fee of USD 34. It is recommended to apply for a Kenya eTA at least 14 days before your trip, and absolutely no later than 3 days prior to departure. Standard processing takes around 3 working days (72 hours), but applying earlier allows time for unforeseen delays. We also recommend applying as soon as you have booked your accommodation and flights, and suggest that families apply together as a group.

Please have the following documents ready before starting your application:

Requirements for all travellers:

Valid passport for at least six (6) months after your planned date of arrival into Kenya, with at least one blank page
Selfie or passport-type photo
Contact information, email address and phone number
Details of your arrival and departure itinerary
Accommodation booking confirmation(s)
Credit card, debit card, Apple Pay or other means of payment

Requirements based on your country of residence and travel history, the following may also be required:

Yellow fever certificate
Other vaccination(s) or test results certificates

Kenya eTA Validity and Multiple Entry

Your Kenya eTA is valid for a single entry, although there are some exceptions to this. Your eTA remains valid for more than one entry if:

You visit one of the following EAC Partner States: Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda, AND
You don’t visit any other country, AND
Your eTA has not expired (90 days from issuance)

Once submitted, please allow three working days for your approval to come through. You can check the status of an existing application via www.etakenya.go.ke using your unique reference number.
