Heritage Day 2026: Celebrating Culture Across the Governors’ Camp Collection

Kenya’s cultural diversity is reflected in its many communities, languages, traditions and stories, each shaped by its own history and passed from one generation to the next. Kenya is home to more than 40 ethnic communities, each carrying its own dress, cuisine, music and oral tradition, and that diversity is part of our teams too, bringing together people from different backgrounds across our camps and houses.

This Heritage Day, we saw that diversity expressed through food, traditional dress, dance and storytelling, each camp finding its own way to celebrate what makes its team’s cultures distinctive. Celebrations took place at Loldia House on 26 August, followed by Governors’ Camp and Governors’ Il Moran Camp in the Masai Mara on 28 August.

A Celebration of Culture at Governors’ Camp

At Governors’ Camp, the day began with a colourful display of Kenyan cultures as team members dressed in traditional attire representing different communities. The variety of dress added a visual expression of the diversity within the team, with each outfit carrying its own cultural identity.

The evening brought everyone together over food. The camp lawn was transformed into an outdoor dining space, with beautifully decorated tables, lanterns and an African-inspired theme creating a warm setting beneath the open sky.

At the heart of the evening was a live barbecue and cooking experience, with food prepared outdoors and enjoyed fresh from the grill. Guests were treated to dinner in the garden, while the staff gathered at the canteen to share a meal and refreshments together.

With traditional dress, a cultural experience and a lively outdoor dinner, the celebrations at Governors’ Camp brought together some of the most familiar ways culture is shared: through food, community and time spent together.

Stories, Traditions and Community at Governors’ Il Moran

At Governors’ Il Moran Camp, the focus was on the people behind the camp and the cultures they carry with them.

Team members came together in traditional attire, creating a colourful reflection of the different communities represented within the Il Moran team. The occasion provided an opportunity to share traditions, learn more about one another and celebrate the cultural backgrounds that are part of everyday life at camp.

Rather than centring on one particular activity, the day brought together the simple elements through which culture is often experienced: what we wear, the traditions we share and the stories that connect us to where we come from.

For the Il Moran team, it was a celebration shaped by participation and togetherness, with colleagues sharing in an experience that reflected the diversity of the people who work alongside one another.

Kalenjin Culture Takes Centre Stage at Loldia House

At Loldia House, the celebrations on 26 August centred on Kalenjin culture, with the team exploring traditions through dance, food and oral storytelling.

Kalenjin dances brought energy to the occasion, while a selection of traditional dishes offered a taste of the region’s culinary heritage. Among them was Mursik, the fermented milk traditionally prepared and enjoyed by Kalenjin communities. Mursik is made by fermenting fresh milk in a specially prepared gourd, traditionally cleaned and smoked with charcoal from select local woods, which gives the milk its distinctive flavour and helps preserve it. It’s a drink with deep roots in Kalenjin daily life and hospitality, often served to guests and during significant gatherings.

One of the highlights was an oral cultural narrative presented by Loldia House team members Mzee Joel Bitok and Mzee Stephen Mebett. Drawing on their knowledge of Kalenjin history, they shared the origins of the various Kalenjin sub-tribes and traced their migrations to the areas where different communities live today.

Their presentation went beyond history, touching on traditional dress and other aspects of Kalenjin culture. Through spoken history and personal knowledge, the session offered the team an opportunity to learn about traditions that have long been preserved through storytelling and passed between generations.

The combination of dance, food and oral history gave the celebration at Loldia House a distinctly cultural character, with the team learning as much as they participated.

An opportunity to share

Our camps bring together people from different parts of Kenya, each carrying their own experiences, traditions and knowledge. Creating space to share these with colleagues allows people to learn from one another while recognising the cultures that continue to shape their communities.

Food, dress, dance and storytelling are more than elements of a celebration. They are ways of preserving knowledge, remembering history and passing traditions forward, and they’re also part of what guests can experience firsthand during a stay. Guests keen to explore Maasai culture in more depth can join a Maasai Cultural Visit, offered from both Governors’ Camp and Il Moran, for a closer look at the traditions, dress and daily life of neighbouring Maasai communities.
