Supporting the rescue, rehabilitation and long-term protection of raptors
Kenya is a global stronghold for a 103 species of birds of prey. However, the vast majority of these species face severe threats from habitat loss, agricultural poisoning, and electrocution on poorly designed power infrastructure. Recent data indicates that even previously common species have seen population declines of over 90% in recent decades.
The Soysambu Raptor Centre, in collaboration with the Kenya Bird of Prey Trust and The Peregrine Fund is committed to reversing and mitigating many of these modern threats. By focusing on these apex predators, they support the health and ecological balance of the Kenyan wilderness.
The Soysambu Raptor Centre was founded by Simon Thomsett, a world-renowned expert in raptor conservation whose lifelong dedication has shaped bird of prey protection across the African continent and beyond. Governors’ Camp Collection is proud to support his life-saving work, providing some of the resources required for the Centre’s intensive daily operations.
Central to our contribution is the direct provision of fresh meat, ensuring that the rescued birds receive the high-protein diet necessary for recovery and strength. To maintain these vital supplies, we have provided essential infrastructure, including a solar-powered freezer unit to store the 200kg of food consumed monthly. From specialised clinical care to raising orphaned chicks, our partnership ensures that Simon’s expertise is backed by the resources needed to rescue, rehabilitate, and when possible, release these incredible birds back into the wild.
